Gone are the days when web designers, publishers and media folk have to spend thousands to hire photographers to do their shoots. Millions of images available at their finger tips at a fraction of the cost is one way that stock photography is providing a valuable service.
Each site caters for different tastes
Spend some time searching through sites before deciding which one to go for, some sites prefer some types of pictures that some other might reject, the above picture is an example of one I have had accepted (shutterstock) and rejected (istockphoto).
When pictures are submittted to sites you always have to select a catagory that your work falls under. I often find that some of my most bought pictures do not have a category in one site, yet it sells brilliantly on another.
Of course you could join more than one site and keep your options open, this however is more costly.
If you search the internet there are even sites that will cater for a very specific type of picture, some look for photos of different places, others will only accept pictures of people doing different things.
Subscription Services
Subscription services have advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is the cost. From as little as 7p per picture you can select from over 5 million different pictures and use them legally on web site, advertising, marketing, magazines providing you pay the correct fee for what you want them for. The downside is that if you do not use your quota for the day you lose those credits and therefore may pay more than you would have. The most popular site for subscription based downloads is Shutterstock.
As more and more sites realise the benefits of subscription based service, they are all starting to follow suit and introduce their own version of the service. This of course saves you, the buyer, a lot in the long run, whilst still ensuring you have an ever expanding library of work to choose from.
