You do not need to have the best equipment, but good equipment does help. As many sites require a minimum photo size (usually 4 mega pixels), a decent camera is a must. Forget anything less than 6mp and a DLSR’s are almost a must so forget your point and shoot. Recently we have seen the introduction of bridge cameras, also known as Pen cameras. The Lumix G1 looks like a good inbetweener, we shall see what quality if any it will bring to stock photography.

So here is what I would recommend, a good DSLR (Canon, Nikon, Sony etc) at least 12mp, a good sturdy tripod, a remote trigger, a couple of good lenses (including a prime lens), and a set of studio lights and light tent (for studio shots). Also a good, comfortable camera bag, as your camera will be attached to you wherever you go. Always buy what you can comfortably afford, cutting corners will only cost you in the long run.

If you have the means then get out there, plan ahead and make a day of it, it doesn’t always have to be about business. The shot below was taken on a day trip to Bo’ness with the kids, a short stop, at the roadside was enough to catch this shot.
